Seeking Christ During Advent

The wise men searched for Christ, were led, and found him. Where can we find Christ today if we search for him? He is not distant from us, though it may seem so sometimes. Through the Bible and the traditions of the Church we are reminded of how we can be close to Christ in our everyday lives.

We are very close to him whenever we help someone who is poor or suffering. Jesus said “For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, a stranger and you welcomed me, naked and you clothed me, ill and you cared for me, in prison and you visited me… whatever you did for one of these least brothers of mine, you did for me” (Mt 25:35,40).

Christ also guides us in a special way through reading and praying with the Bible, if we listen with our hearts open and ask to be guided by God’s Holy Spirit. Christ is present in the sacraments of the Church, which are an ‘outward sign of an inward grace’, i.e. they are signs of something holy and hidden, which can help to make us more Christ-like.

The Mass is a sacrament and through this we are given one of the most amazing ways of being close to Christ. In the Mass we remember Christ’s life, death and resurrection. The priest repeats Christ’s words at the Last Supper, and by the power of the Holy Spirit, the bread and wine are changed in to Christ’s Body and Blood, and he is made truly present. Though we cannot see him, he is close to us in Holy Communion, and we can worship him and share our every concern.
